Highlights
- Keeps characters and settings consistent across multiple shots with References - Act-Two lets an AI character "perform" your exact movements and expressions - Aleph edits existing footage: add or remove objects, change camera angle, adjust lighting - Camera Control and Motion Brush give you direct control over camera and object motion - Gen-4.5 delivers near-photoreal image quality and lighting, with 4K support - A friendly interface that doesn't require film-editing experience to use

Have you ever typed a detailed prompt into an AI video tool, only to get a character with a completely different face in the very next shot? That's the biggest reason AI video still isn't trusted for professional production work: you can't control the output, you can only keep regenerating and hoping for the best. Runway AI was built to solve exactly that problem. Rather than being just another random video generator, Runway has built a full toolkit that lets you keep characters consistent, direct their performance, and edit the finer details of a video, the way a real director works with a crew. Let's walk through what Runway AI is, who it's for, how to use it effectively, and the limitations worth knowing before you "direct" your first AI film.

What is Runway AI?

What Is Runway AI? How to Direct AI Video Like a Pro-001

Runway is an AI platform for creating and editing moving image content, launched in 2018 by three co-founders who met through the ITP program at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. The company helped develop the well-known Stable Diffusion model before focusing its efforts on its own video-focused Gen model line (now at Gen-4.5). Alongside its own models, Runway also integrates several leading third-party models (Seedance, FLUX, Ideogram, and Grok Imagine) directly into the same interface, so you can pick whichever model best suits a given shot.

Runway's core design philosophy isn't "generate as much video as possible," it's putting control back in the user's hands. With References, you supply reference images, video, or audio (anywhere from 3 to 30, depending on the model) so the AI keeps the same face and setting consistent across shots instead of improvising each time. Runway also packages dozens of specialized tasks into standalone "Apps" (character swaps, background changes, performance transfer, and more) so newcomers can get solid results without writing complex prompts. This is what has made Runway a tool of choice for professional studios and agencies, not just casual creators.

Who Runway AI is for

Content creators

Build b-roll, transitions, or even a recurring virtual character for your channel without a camera or actors, since References keeps the same face consistent across videos.

Marketers and ad agencies

Quickly mock up ad concepts with multiple camera angles and lighting variations in a matter of hours, ideal for testing ideas before committing to a real shoot.

Independent filmmakers and film students

Use Act-Two to act out a scene on a phone camera, then transfer that performance onto an AI character, telling visual stories without a cast or a set.

Developers and product teams

Runway's API (Runway Dev) lets you plug AI video generation and editing directly into an automated content pipeline.

Standout features

References: keeping characters consistent

This is the backbone of Runway's director-style philosophy. Depending on the model, you upload anywhere from a few to a few dozen reference images, videos, or audio clips, and the AI extracts the key traits and applies them consistently to every shot generated afterward, no fine-tuning required. Many other AI video tools still struggle here, with characters' faces shifting noticeably from one shot to the next.

Act-Two: performance on your terms

Instead of letting the AI improvise motion, Act-Two lets you record a reference performance yourself, then maps that expression and movement onto an AI character or reference image. The result is a character that performs exactly the way you intended, even across multi-character dialogue scenes. This isn't a model you pick inside the Tools mode. It's a standalone App called "Performance Capture with Act-Two," found under Apps → Video, and it's only available on the Standard plan and above.

Aleph (Edit Studio): editing existing footage

Aleph 2.0 is Runway's video-editing model: add or remove objects, change the visual style, adjust lighting, or even generate a new camera angle from an existing clip, all while keeping motion smooth and consistent over time. You can select "Aleph 2.0" (labeled "Edit videos") directly from the model list on the Edit tab, or use the Edit Studio App under Apps → Video. Either way, you can fix a shot or try a new direction without starting over from scratch.

Benefits of using Runway AI

Saves production time and cost

No camera crew, actors, or set required. A single shot can be generated and revised multiple times in just minutes.

Consistent characters and branding

Thanks to References, a brand character can appear identically across dozens of different videos, something that's nearly impossible with AI video tools that generate each shot independently.

One integrated workflow

From generating a shot, to directing a character's performance, to editing the footage, everything happens inside a single platform instead of bouncing between apps.

Step-by-step guide to using Runway AI

Step 1: Create an account

Go to runway.com and click "Try Runway" in the top-right corner (or "Try Runway for free"), then click "Signup" and register with your email, Google, or Apple account to get 125 one-time credits.

Step 2: Choose the Tools mode

Runway has four creation modes in its navigation bar: Tools (manual, precise control; hover over the icon and it's labeled "Tool"), Apps (task-specific packaged tools), Agent (describe your idea conversationally and let the AI build a multi-shot video), and Workflows (build automated pipelines). For your first video, choose Tools and open the Video tab (or Image/Audio). Runway will have a model pre-selected in the bottom-left corner (usually the newest one, like Seedance 2.5); click that field to open a searchable model list, filterable by provider (Runway, ByteDance, Black Forest Labs, and others), each with a short description (for example, Gen-4.5, Aleph 2.0 "Edit videos," FLUX 3 "Image/Text to Video, Audio") so you can pick the right model for the job.

Step 3: Enter a prompt and upload reference images. For beginners, the easiest approach is to type a plain, natural-language description, much like chatting with a chatbot. For example, you could simply type:

"Generate me an image of a blonde horse running in the sand desert".

Runway returns the result right inside the workspace, along with suggestions for what to do next, like "generate another version" or "turn this image into a video." This is also the fastest way to get a first result before learning to write more detailed prompts (subject, then action, then setting, then lighting, then camera movement; more on this in the Tips section below). If you need a consistent character or setting across multiple shots, upload reference images, video, or audio on the Reference tab; it's best to write prompts in English so the model interprets them as accurately as possible.

Step 4: Fine-tune the motion

Use Camera Control to describe camera movement, or Motion Brush to paint the specific areas you want in motion.

Step 5: Generate and download

Click "Generate," preview the result, then Export to download it once you're happy with it. Note: if your account is on the Free plan, this button usually reads "Upgrade" instead of "Generate," and you won't be able to generate anything, because Gen-4.5 (Runway's default model) requires the Standard plan or higher. The same is true for Seedance 2.5 and most other partner models. In other words, the Free plan currently only lets you explore the interface, not actually create video; you'll need to upgrade to Standard or above to use this step for real.

Step 6: Explore the advanced modes (optional)

If you want an AI character to perform exactly like a reference video you recorded yourself, or to edit an existing video instead of generating a new one, switch to Apps mode and look for "Performance Capture with Act-Two" (for performance) or "Edit Studio" (powered by the Aleph model, for editing). If you'd rather hand the whole process to the AI and have it plan and build a multi-shot video from a single description, try Agent mode. Keep in mind Runway's interface updates frequently, so button names and locations may shift slightly over time.

Tips for getting the best results

Structure your prompts clearly

Describe things in order, subject, action, setting, lighting, camera movement, rather than writing something vague. The more specific the prompt, the less the output will "drift" visually.

Use high-quality reference images

Photos used for References should be clear, well-lit, and shot from a straight-on angle so the AI can extract accurate traits, helping the character keep its look consistent across shots.

Prefer editing with Aleph over regenerating

When a video is almost right but a few details are off, use Aleph to fix it instead of generating from scratch. It saves credits and preserves the parts you already liked.

Runway AI pricing

  • Free ($0/month): 125 one-time credits, 5GB of storage. Note: Gen-4.5 and most current video models (including Seedance 2.5) require the Standard plan or higher, so in practice the Free plan only lets you get familiar with the interface. It can't actually generate video.

  • Standard ($15/month, $12/month billed annually): 625 credits/month (about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 video), full access to image/video models, 4K upscaling, no watermark, and Act-Two unlocked. Suited to individual content creators.

  • Pro ($35/month, $28/month billed annually): 2,250 credits/month (about 187 seconds), custom voice, 500GB storage, unlimited Topaz AI Upscale. Suited to freelancers and small agencies.

  • Max ($95/month, $76/month billed annually): 9,500 credits/month that roll over, early access to new models, ProRes export, 16-bit HDR. Suited to professional studios.

  • Enterprise (custom pricing): Adds SSO, workspace analytics, teamspace management, and priority support. Suited to larger businesses and studios.

Limitations of Runway AI

The Free plan can't actually generate video

Gen-4.5 (the default model) requires the Standard plan or higher, and so do most newer partner models like Seedance 2.5. Free-plan users will immediately hit an "Upgrade" button instead of "Generate," even with credits still remaining. The initial 125 credits are essentially just for exploring the interface.

Complex shots are prone to errors

Scenes with fast motion, crowded frames, or complicated camera angles can still come out warped or move unnaturally, particularly around hands and fine detail.

Costs can add up quickly with heavy use

Everything runs on a credit system, and Gen-4.5 alone costs about 12 credits per second of video, so producing content at scale can end up costing more than expected.

Individual clips are still short, and it depends on a stable connection

Each generation typically produces only a few seconds up to under a minute of footage, so you'll need to stitch multiple clips together for a full video, and since everything processes in the cloud, a stable internet connection is required.

Overall

Runway AI isn't a tool where you type a prompt and leave the outcome to chance. It's a toolkit that lets you genuinely "direct" AI video: choosing who appears, how they perform, and editing the details afterward. That's why professional studios and agencies rely on it, rather than treating it as a novelty. If you're looking for an AI video tool that lets you keep creative control instead of rolling the dice on every generation, Runway AI is worth exploring. Just keep in mind that the Free plan is currently only enough to explore the interface, not to generate real video, so you'll want to weigh a Standard plan or above if you want the full experience before deciding whether to commit long-term.
