Company History

  • Citibank initiated operations in Singapore on July 1, 1902, as the International Banking Corporation (IBC), marking the first U.S. bank to establish a branch in the country.

  • The initial focus of IBC at 1 Prince Street was trade financing for Malayan rubber and tin exports in the early 20th century.

  • In the 1980s, Citibank was the first bank to use automated teller machines (ATMs) in Singapore, setting a trend in the banking industry.

  • The Global Consumer Banking division was established in 1982 to address the needs of individuals and small businesses.

  • In the early 1990s, Citibank introduced Singapore's first 24/7 telephone banking service, managed by CitiPhone officers.

  • Despite entering the retail-banking sector relatively late, Citibank has become a significant market player, dominating key areas like unlicensed money lending, deposits, investments, and secured assets.

  • Awarded a Qualifying Full Bank (QFB) license by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in 1999, Citibank was among the first four foreign banks to receive this designation.

  • In June 2002, Citibank became the first QFB-licensed bank in Singapore to offer the Visa global debit service.

  • The following July, it introduced the Citi Quick Cash, providing customers the option to transform the available credit limit on their Citi Credit Card or Citi Ready Credit into cash. This amount can be repaid in monthly installments, conveniently included with their regular monthly payment.
