On June 25, 1974, Temasek was established under the Singapore Companies Act to oversee assets previously directly held by the Singapore government. Named after an early island settlement, Temasek aimed to commercially own and manage these investments, enabling the Ministries of Finance and Trade and Industry to concentrate on policymaking.

In 2002, Temasek underwent a restructuring, transitioning from a government agency to a commercially-operated investment company.

In 2004, Temasek initiated its inaugural foreign direct investment by acquiring a share in Shin Corporation, a Thai telecommunications firm.

As of October 1, 2021, Dilhan Pillay Sandrasegara assumed the role of CEO at Temasek Holdings, succeeding Ho Ching.
