#5 Feasible Recruitment Predictions for 2023

If nothing changes, the next 12 months promise countless uncertainties. However, it is highly likely that 2023 will be a year in which personnel-related decisions such as layoffs, extensive recruitment, the return wave to the workplace, hybrid jobs, internal mobility, transparent salary policies, etc., will have a greater impact on profitability and employee decision-making than ever before.

The significant challenges that recruitment experts face are also tremendous opportunities for them. Companies that have good employee engagement policies, nurturing creativity, fostering happiness, developing and deploying employees' skills, etc., will be the companies that safely overcome challenges in the recruitment market and strive for success.

Prediction 1: Recruitment Professionals Will Permanently Leave the Industry

#5 Feasible Recruitment Predictions for 2023-001

I am sensing a fundamental shift in our recruitment industry. Over the past few years, many recruitment teams have experienced multiple rounds of layoffs, and I predict that we will see people permanently leaving the field of recruitment. This will result in an even greater talent shortage as the market rebounds, and once again, recruiters will find themselves in the midst of a high-demand battle for personnel, as we have witnessed in previous cycles.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, some recruiters have faced layoffs three times or more. I do not blame individuals for wanting to move away from the chaos that is currently unfolding. The talent pool for attracting recruits has recently become quite narrow, so the need to retain and develop recruitment talent has never been more crucial. I am concerned that if 2021 appears to be a challenging market for talent acquisition, the coming years may prove to be even more difficult.

Prediction 2: Recruitment Teams Will Have Opportunities to Showcase Their Creativity

#5 Feasible Recruitment Predictions for 2023-002

With teams needing to do more with less and visual communication becoming an essential skill, I predict that you will see talent attraction teams increasingly harnessing their creativity to differentiate, problem-solve, and attract—particularly to recruit Generation Z.

And while recruitment may slow down or temporarily pause in many places, companies will double down on recruitment marketing efforts and employer branding to be ready when the business market resumes. This will create ideal opportunities for recruitment teams to enhance their creative writing skills, marketing 101, social media, and visual communication.

Prediction 3: ChatGPT Will Help Companies and Employees Learn New Skills

#5 Feasible Recruitment Predictions for 2023-003

ChatGPT, the newly released free tool by OpenAI, has been advertised as an assistant that can attract multitasking candidates, work quickly, generate job descriptions, create interview questions, compose emails for candidates, and more.

However, as internal mobility skills and capabilities are proving effective, I predict that companies will begin experimenting with ChatGPT to help train their employees in new skills. Over time, this can accelerate internal mobility opportunities and enable companies to develop the skills they need for the future in real-time. It would be fantastic if many companies seize this moment to restructure their workforce and harness the skills and insights of their employees, rather than laying them off.

Prediction 4: Recruitment teams have become the backbone of companies.

#5 Feasible Recruitment Predictions for 2023-004

When executed well, skills development and internal mobility require all teams within the talent function - from recruitment to learning and development to compensation and total rewards - to work together. I predict that 2023 will be the year when we, recruitment experts, truly become the drivers of companies, tasked with finding agile employees and growth strategies that can help stabilize the organization.

With the rapid market fluctuations and persistent labor shortages, a company's recruitment strategy has never been more critical to overall success. The recruitment team holds the data, detailed insights, and strategic leverage on retention, skills, internal mobility, career development, and various workplace factors that drive growth - or, in this year's case, help businesses continue to operate effectively.

Prediction 5: The Link between Employer Brand and Customers Will Strengthen

#5 Feasible Recruitment Predictions for 2023-005

Issues such as burnout, decreased labor productivity, job flexibility, and wages continue to be the central focus for companies, employees, and the general public. I predict that how companies treat their employees will impact customer decisions. For me, Tesla is a prime example of this - the decisions Elon Musk has made regarding work-life balance, flexibility, and how he treats his employees at Tesla and Twitter are influencing customer spending decisions.
